Katsumata is one of the New Itto-ryu recruits originally from the Nangai-Itto-ryu sword school along with Koda.
Plot
Introduction
Katsumata is introduced along with all of the other new Itto-ryu recruits, under the old burnt down Dojo, as a former member of the Nangai-Itto-ryu dojo.
Rokki-dan
When the Rokki-dan invade the Itto-ryu Dojo, Katsumata, and the others kill the remaining Hebigumi with bows, and run away. WhenRyo Soma tries to stop them, Katsumata decides to confront her, so the others can get ahead. Katsumata hits Ryo on the shoulder, just to find out that she had shoulder guards, and is slashed through the chest and nearly killed by Ryo.
Leaving Edo
When the Itto-ryu is officially banned from Edo, Katsumata and the others make their way towards Hitachi. Far along the way they spend the night at a shack, but the next day they are confronted by Shishiya Arashino, Tarieshin Hasshu, and Shozo Murasaki of the Rokki-dan. Katsumata and the rest of the new recruits quit the Itto-ryu, so that they can fight six on one, while Ariusu, Yatoin, and Koda bring Sosuke Abayama to safety. Katsumata watches as Kurehiro battles Tarieshin Hasshu, and notices that Kurehiro was much stronger than he seemed in the school. Kurehiro proves to be a small challenge for Tarieshin, who starts a conversation in his native language with him. In the end Kurehiro is decapitated, and as Katsumata runs to catch Tarieshin off guard, Tarieshin decapitates Katsumata with a mere flick of his wrist.

Katsumata, just like every other one of the Itto-ryu recruits, uses a standard Katana, and on occasion a bow.
Abilities
Katsumata is fairly weak compared to other recruits like Kurehiro, but he was able to get a hit on Ryo Soma, even though her shoulder armor blocked it.
